How To Stay Healthy When You Work In An Office

Working in an office job can be bad for your health, which is a big problem because so many of us work in that environment. You wouldn’t think that sitting in an office all day working at a desk could do you too much harm but it’s actually very bad for you and there are a lot of health problems that are common in office workers. If you work in an office, these are some of the health risks that you should be aware of and how you can avoid them.

Weight Gain 

Weight gain is a big one because you’re not moving around at all which means that it’s a lot easier for you to put weight on. People are also more prone to snacking when they work in an office job, so it’s easy to put a lot of weight on in a very short space of time.

That means you need to pay extra attention to how active you are and watch what you eat as well. You should try to get up and move around for 5 minutes every now and again so you’re not sitting down all day long without any movement at all. On top of that, you need to try to fit as much exercise into your routine as possible.

That can be difficult when you have a busy work life but anything that you can do is a big help. When it comes to your diet, you need to swap out your snacks for healthier alternatives and try to prepare healthier lunches for yourself, rather than buying food every day. It’ll save you money and you’ll have a balanced diet that doesn’t cause weight gain. 

Back Problems 

Back problems are very common in office workers because sitting down all day, especially if you don’t have good posture, is not good for your back at all. The first thing you need to do is to make sure that you’ve got a good chair that offers the right support, otherwise, you’ll find it hard to maintain good posture.

Being more aware of the way that you sit is important too because you need to avoid slouching if you don’t want a bad back. If your back is particularly bad, you should see a spine doctor and get their advice. They will be able to offer therapy to help improve your posture and reduce pain and in some cases, possibly even surgery if it’s really bad. You can also do stretches in the evenings to relieve some of the muscle tension from sitting all day. 

Repetitive Strain Injury 

Repetitive strain injury occurs when you perform the same tasks over and over, like typing for example, and it causes damage to overused muscles and tendons. You can experience it in any part of your body but in office workers, it’s likely to occur in the wrists and fingers due to typing on a computer all day long. There are a lot of ways to prevent repetitive strain injury but the most important thing is that you’re taking breaks and you keep your hands in a typing position that offers support to your wrists. 

If you work in an office, you’re at risk of developing all of these health problems unless you take daily action to prevent them.
